Errai II, more commonly known simply as Errai, is the second of seven planets in the system.[1]

Planetary History[edit]

Age of War[edit]

Errai was settled with the intent of becoming a major industrial world, and it succeeded. By the twenty-fourth century, Errai was already a wealthy independent world, and shortly after Errai had signed a mutual defense pact with the nearby worlds of Helen and Quentin it was targeted for conquest by Director-General James McKenna of the newly formed Terran Hegemony. Having secured his hold over all of the worlds within the rump state of the Terran Alliance, McKenna began a "Campaign of Persuasion" to bring other former Alliance worlds and independent worlds into the Hegemony through military force, and the three allied worlds of Errai, Helen and Quentin were his first targets.[5]

In March 2316, McKenna attacked the Errai system with a large fleet of WarShips, and despite knowing that there was little chance of resisting the invasion, the leaders of each of the three allied worlds planned to teach McKenna a lesson; all three worlds converted fleets of cargo and interplanetary courier ships into fighting vessels by adding lasers and missile tubes to battle in space, and all three worlds beefed up their ground forces with large militia forces of trained personnel augmented by volunteers. The colonists on Errai fought a dogged, even fanatical, campaign of resistance against the Hegemony Armed Forces before finally being conquered, and the resistance offered by those on Errai taught the HAF a number of harsh lessons.[5]

Star League[edit]

Errai prospered during the Star League era, with the planet gaining or developing a wide range of local companies manufacturing products ranging from fusion reactors, IndustrialMechs, heavy industrial equipment and electronics.[1]

When Stefan Amaris launched Operation APOTHEOSIS, his usurpation of the Terran Hegemony, one of the initial stages of his campaign was to secure naval domination of the systems within the Hegemony. Rim Worlds Republic naval forces consisting of WarShips, DropShips, and aerospace fighters attempted to secure the two major jump points in every inhabited system, including Errai. At the start of APOTHEOSIS, Errai had one Castle Brian.[54][55]

The RWR's efforts were frustrated in the Errai system, where a large SLDF supply convoy consisting of critical supplies and replacement troops destined for the forces engaged in fighting the Periphery Uprising was being assembled under the command of Commodore Justine Campos. A task force of five RWR WarShips attempted to interdict the convoy, but Commodore Campos drove her lighter, six-strong WarShip detachment directly into the heart of the RWR formation. While the SLDF task force was at a significant disadvantage in terms of tonnage, the ships were all fresh from the fighting on the Periphery front, making them considerably sharper and more experienced than their attackers. The SLDF forces lost four ships but destroyed all five attacking vessels; the two surviving light SLDF WarShips then fought a ten-minute last stand at the Errai nadir jump point, buying time against the flotillas of RWR DropShips and Fighters to allow the supply convoy to escape. The heavily laden supply vessels were all able to jump out of the system or proceed into deep space to rendezvous and then jump away, although neither SLDF WarShip survived.[54]

After the liberation of Terra SLDF General Jack Lucas retired to Errai, having been placed on convalescent leave as a result of combat stress and his increasingly hostile attitude towards enemy personnel. Lucas began a new career in politics, and was quickly elected to the position of Planetary Governor. As Governor Lucas used a combination of his forceful personality and his larger-than-life reputation earned as commander of the SLDF Third Army to help rebuild Errai, but the arrival of the Succession Wars soured him permanently on warfare, and he retired from public life to serve as a parish priest on Errai and then Northwind.[56]

Errai survived the initial predations of the Great House Annexations of the former Terran Hegemony from 2783 through 2786, but even that would not last[57]

First Succession War[edit]

The Draconis Combine conquered Errai sometime between 2787 and 2791.[58] The exact date has been lost in that conflagration, but nearby worlds fall under Combine rule in the early months of 2787.[59]

Second Succession War[edit]

Errai was assaulted in 2835 by unknown forces. This resulted in the destruction of the Maltex Corporation factory on the world.[60][61] The Federated Suns occupied Errai in 2845, leading to Errai briefly experiencing a surge in commercialism and the establishment of a notable number of casinos and nightclubs. This in turn led to local mobs taking over or influencing the new casinos and nightclubs, leading to an era of widespread crime and corruption that came to characterize Errai's political and business dealings.[62][1] At war's end in 2864, the Second Crucis Lancers were garrisoned there.[63]

Third Succession War[edit]

The Combine raided the city of Trent in 2888, attempting to loot the warehouses. They withdrew under withering artillery fire.[64]

The Eighth Sword of Light raided the planet in 2901 but faced such fierce aerospace resistance that the raid was aborted mid drop, the surviving Combine troops abandoned on the planet.[65]

War of 3039[edit]

Errai served as a major supply depot for the planned invasion of the Draconis Combine which became known as the War of 3039.[66] It was also the jump-off world for the Twenty-second Avalon Hussars, First FedCom RCT, Fourth FedCom RCT, and all four Regiments of the Twelfth Vegan Rangers. The Twenty-second Avalon Hussars, First FedCom, the and Twelfth Vegan Rangers' Gamma and Delta Regiments retreated to Errai following their debacles on Telos IV and Nashira respectively.[67][68]

Postbellum[edit]

In 3040, following the conclusion of the War of 3039, Stirling's Fusiliers and the Third Lyran Regulars were garrisoned on Errai. Both Regiments would relocate to Northwind and Pitkin by 3050, though the timing is unknown.[67][69] It is known that the Fusiliers were still on Errai in 3042 to defend against another Combine raid. The Ninth Dieron Regulars learned of the supply cache for the last war, much of it still intact, and sought to secure what they could and destroy the rest.[70]

Civil War[edit]

After the formation of the Second Star League, the Maltex Corporation received investment capital from ComStar to reconstruct their factories on the world for the production of Wyvern and Thug BattleMechs. By 3064, the factories were in production again.[71][72] Throughout the Federated Commonwealth Civil War, Errai was garrisoned by Harlock's Warriors.

Jihad[edit]

The world was raided by the Combine in 3068. In late 3069, the world came under attack by the Word of Blake, and after a long guerrilla campaign, Harlock's Warriors fled the world in 3070 due to lack of supplies.[73][74]

Dark Age[edit]

Maltex continued to produce IndustrialMechs and BattleMechs into the Dark Age, although at a reduced rate of production to that seen during Operation REVIVAL. Errai was also home to a relatively small corporation named Null-Gee Metals that operated a large number of asteroid mining colonies within the Errai system asteroid belt. Like Maltex, Null-Gee Metals was based on Carrigan.[1]

Military Deployment[edit]

Geography[edit]

Errai has two major continents, the primary continent being Carrigan and the secondary continent being Hallens.[1]

Notes[edit]

  • Beginning with Technical Readout: 3050, the idea that around the Fourth Succession War Errai was a Draconis Combine world entered into the lore. This was later corrected in Technical Readout: 3050 Update as misdirection to throw MIIO off the trail of the Hatamoto-Chi being produced on Luthien which was then picked up by one of Adept Merle Jimmus' Acolytes. This error appeared in a few other places such as the Tactical Handbook and more recently the Dark Age: Republic Worlds (3130). In light of the MIIO disinformation retcon and the plethora of sources to the contrary the corrected history will be used above, but the alternative information will be documented here:
    • The Draconis Combine conquered Errai during the Fourth Succession War and made an effort to root out the embedded corruption and install a government more in keeping with the typical Combine style. As a part of these efforts many of the nightclubs and casinos established during the previous three centuries vanished, but a combination of entrepreneurs and engineers from the Combine reopened and upgraded a local AgroMech plant under the name of the Maltex Corporation, a former Star League era BattleMech manufacturer. This upgraded factory went on to produce the new Hatamoto-Chi, based loosely on the Charger BattleMech. It also produced the Mech Mortar[1][90]
