Command Structure
Coordinator
The Coordinator of the Draconis Combine is the titular head of the DCMS, although a significant amount of authority can be delegated to a Gunji-no-Kanrei.
Gunji-no-Kanrei
The post of Gunji-no-Kanrei (Deputy of Military Affairs) was resurrected after the Fourth Succession War by Coordinator Takashi Kurita to oversee the rebuilding and restructuring of the DCMS, reporting only to the Coordinator himself. Prior to the Fourth Succession War, the only figure to hold the position was Urizen Kurita I, and it has been a matter of speculation whether the position will remain active.
Military District Commanders
The military districts that make up the Combine are ruled by a Tai-shu (Warlord) who is in command of all military forces in the district.
Units of the Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery
The Combine military is divided between those units assigned to the defense of a specific military district and so-called free floating regiments who are assigned as needed.
Deployment Status
In 2750 the DCMS had a strengh of 55 BattleMech Forces and 30 WarShips. As of 2765 they were well equiped with 115 'Mech regiments, and the naval fleet had a volume of 42 vessels.[1]
Active Brigades
These brigades are active as of 3079.[2]
Benjamin Regulars
While the Benjamin Military District is one of the smallest, the DCMS High Command uses the Benjamin Regulars as a ready-reserve to bolster both defensive and offensive operations.
Benjamin Regulars | ||
---|---|---|
Dieron Regulars
With the Dieron Military District closest to Terra, the well respected Dieron Regulars frequently see action against both the Lyran Commonwealth and Federated Suns and boast more 'Mech regiments than any other military district.
Dieron Regulars | ||
---|---|---|
Galedon Regulars
Assigned to protect the largest section of the Combine bordering the Federated Suns and the Periphery, along with the former capital New Samarkand, the Galedon Regulars enjoy good relations with the Sun Zhang MechWarrior Academy and Draconis Combine Port Authority thanks to their location in the Galedon Military District.
Though the Galedon Military District was renamed the New Samarkand Military District, Galedon Regulars units that survived the Jihad were not renamed. New units raised in the New Samarkand Military District were raised as New Samarkand Regulars, however.[3]
Galedon Regulars | ||

Pesht Regulars
The largest of the military districts and boasting the Combine's capital of Luthien, the Pesht Regulars also had the fewest 'Mech regiments thanks to Pesht Military District's position away from the Lyran and Davion borders, a choice which hampered the defense of the region during the Clan Invasion.

The Genyosha regiments are two of the pinnacle units in the DCMS.
Overview
The Genyosha are Dragon's elite fanatical shock troops, a floating command, answerable only to the Coordinator, their loyalty is unquestioned, they are thinkers as well as fighters, they are the embodiment of iemoto Yorinaga Kurita. The Genyosha are on the same tier of status as both the Second Sword of Light and the Hikage. Their victories span from Terra to the Clan Homeworlds. Two Coordinators—Theodore Kurita and Hohiro Kurita—have led or commanded the Genyosha. When Theodore Kurita became Gunji-no-Kanrei, the Genyosha changed from a pure 'Mech regiment a more flexiable combined-arms regiment. The Genyosha have fought on Luthien, both times to save the Combine from both Clan and traitor forces. The Genyosha are one of the few units able to stockpile battlefield salvage, they are a top priority for replacements, and can hand pick soldiers from other units. Finally, they are also one of the most C3-equipped units in the DCMS.
The formation grew between the Fourth Succession War and the Clan Invasion to two Regiments.
History
In 3013, Takashi Kurita was the Commander of the Second Sword of Light when the Second Sword attacked Mallory's World. Yorinaga was the Commander of the Second Battalion under Takashi. The Federated Suns would lose its First Prince, Ian Davion however the Second Sword of Light would retreat off world after the famous duel between Yorinaga and Morgan Kell, and Takashi being denied the prize of Ian Davion's body. Both Morgan and Yorinaga would retreat to monasteries. The "Genyosha" - the Black Ocean, was formed on 1 January 3027 when now Coordinator Takashi Kurita sent Jiro Ishiyama to Echo directing Yorinaga to form the elite unit. Yorinaga would be able to pick fifty men, one for each year of his age, who would then train fifty men until all of those in the Genyosha would have the same heart and mind as Yorinaga. The Genyosha would have no superior except the Coordinator. The Coordinator of the Draconis Combine's first mission for Yorinaga and the Genyosha was the "utter destruction of the Kell Hounds."
Upon their formation the Genyosha reported directly to the Coordinator. They later reported directly to Gunji-no-Kanrei Theodore Kurita.[4]
Both elite Genyosha regiments proved their worth time and time again throughout the Clan Invasion, with the First bringing the Combine two major victories: the Battles of Wolcott and Luthien. While aiding the fight on Luthien, the Second was not so lucky: by the Battle of Tukayyid only a battalion survived, with Tai-sa Asano recommending the unit be temporarily retired so it could be carefully rebuilt to ensure its elite status was not diluted. The reborn Second returned to active service in June 3057.

Color Scheme and Insignia
- Both Genyosha regiments originally used the same paint scheme, ash gray with no accents, but after its return to service in 3057 the Second has added thin black stripes to accent its machines.
- All Genyosha regiments use the same insignia, a black tsunami full of stars. Both regiments prominently display this on the upper left torso or upper left arm, and on an appropriate spot on vehicles or fighters. The dragon crest of House Kurita is displayed on the upper right leg of each 'Mech or equivalently on other vehicle types.

Otomo
Otomo | |
Formed | pre-3000 |
Nickname | The Dragon's Warders |
Affiliation | Draconis Combine |
Parent Command | DCMS |
The Otomo are the Palace Household Guard of the Draconis Combine. Slightly more than a regiment in size, their sole purpose is to protect Unity Palace on Luthien and the Coordinator. Members of the Otomo are taken from Sword of Light regiments and the five military districts. The Coordinator assembles a list of potential members, who are then investigated by the Internal Security Force.[1] Unit composition is a mix of 'Mechs, armor, and infantry. Traditionally, only a member of the Kurita family can become commander of the Otomo.
History
Membership in the Otomo is restricted to the most highly skilled soldiers of the DCMS. However, seeking appointment to the Otomo is seen as self-aggrandizing. Instead one is chosen for a position in the Otomo.[2]
First Succession War
The Otomo would accompany Coordinator Minoru Kurita during the Combine's First Succession War drive into the Federated Suns but were ultimately unable to protect him from assassination by an Armed Forces of the Federated Suns sniper on Kentares. After Minoru's successor Jinjiro Kurita arrived on-world and ordered his troops to "Kill them all", when one of his generals sought further explanation of his command, Jinjiro ordered the Otomo to shoot him which they immediately did as a stark message to his remaining generals.[3][4]
Fourth Succession War
As the Coordinator's bodyguard unit, the Otomo spent the Fourth Succession War on Luthien.
Clan Invasion
During the Clan Invasion, the Otomo fought in the Battle of Luthien. In the course of the fighting the Otomo separated into company-sized units and opened lines of retreat, stalled enemy breakthroughs, and filled gaps that appeared in the DCMS lines. When outnumbered and isolated, they fought multiple foes at once to ensure that the Dragon would face fewer enemies.[1] As a result of this, they took heavy casualties. The regiment was not rebuilt to complete strength until 3054.[citation needed]
Operation Bulldog
The Kokuryu-kai elements of the Otomo turned on Coordinator Theodore Kurita. However, the mercenary command Camacho's Caballeros and the 9th Ghost Regiment intervened and stopped the traitors.[5] Also, the Coordinator's illegitimate son, Franklin Sakamoto, had arrived to defend his father. The Otomo went through a brutal purge, with Sakamoto becoming the commander of the Otomo infantry companies.[6]
Jihad
Battle of Luthien
In December in 3067, forces loyal to the Black Dragon Society invaded Luthien. On New Year's Day, 3068, the Kokuryo-kai Second Sword of Light surrounded and then attacked the Imperial Palace. The Otomo and their fellow samurai Izanagi Warriors fought a delaying action while the Loyalist 3rd Luthien Guards retreated, taking heavy casualties (including the loss of Griffon Meshune) in the process.[7][8] When the commanding officer of the Second Sword of Light, Tai-sa Li Sak To, attempted to execute a number of captured members of the Otomo one of his own officers defied him. Chu-i Takiro Hutchinson recognized that Li Sak To's actions were wrong, and in an act of defiance maneuvered his Katana between To's Akuma and the prisoners, preventing him from murdering them in cold blood. To and Hutchinson then fought each other savagely, a battle that polarized the Second Sword of Light and gave the prisoners time to escape. Although many of the prisoners including Franklin Sakamoto were subsequently recaptured they were able to sound the alarm and thereby alert the First Genyosha. Following the battle fragments of the armor from Hutchinson's Katana were carried by the other members of his lance as reminders of their duty to the Dragon.[9]
The coup devastated the Otomo and the Izanagi Warriors. The two units' survivors joined the First Genyosha in fighting the traitors, operating under the control of Sho-sho Sajori Mitsotisa. They performed as raiders, noted for their precision and later salvage operations.[7]
On 23 August 3072, the joint unit - in a concerted effort alongside the Xi Galaxy of Clan Nova Cat - assaulted a large Blakist supply base defended by the Forty-second Shadow Division, in the Battle of the Kyoto Zen Arcology Project. The DCMS flanking attack was intended to sow confusion within the Blakist defenses, and though deflected, did just that. A Star was able to breach the rear of the base and set off an enormous chemical explosion, resulting in the destruction of multiple units on both sides and a significant loss to the Blakist ammunition supply.[10]
On March 14th 3074, the Word of Blake ROM had leaked information regarding the presence of Buda Weapons Chief Researcher Hideoshi Yamika and his prototype Large X-Pulse Laser to the Kokuryu-kai as a means of wearing down Loyalist defenders in Skytower City. The resulting battle ended with Yamika and his prototypes being hustled aboard a Blakist DropShip.[11]
After the liberation of Luthien in December 3074, the unit was scheduled to be rebuilt around the survivors.[7]
The Otomo relocated to New Samarkand when the Coordinator moved the Draconis Combine capital to that world. Though they were highly skilled raiders, the Battle of Luthien inflicted heavy casualties on the Otomo. They could have avoided many of these casualties, but they refused to sacrifice Combine civilians.[12]
Republic Era
The Otomo's ranks dropped to a third of their pre-Jihad strength, and as of 3085 they were barely above the halfway point of their nominal strength. Though they could rebuild more quickly from the ranks of elite warriors in the DCMS, the Coordinator chose to build more slowly. This decision slowed the growth of the Otomo, the DCMS as a whole benefiting from the presence of elite soldiers. The three survivors of the 3rd Night Stalkers regiment were inducted into the Otomo to reward their continual resistance to the Word of Blake.[13]
Dark Age
The Otomo as of 3145 now carries more than a full regiment of BattleMechs and an expanded battalion of battlesuit infantry. Though there is much criticism of this as other units struggle to fill their ranks. The only justification given is that of its CO says the extra security is needed due to the current war with the Federated Suns, and in order to not let a failure like the death of Vincent Kurita happen again.[14]

Izanagi Warriors
The Izanagi Warriors, also known as "Dragon's Claws", were founded by Takashi Kurita as a bodyguard unit loyal to him personally. This was done to safeguard against the possibility of a coup against him. It was initially formed from retired veterans.[1]
Sword of Light
The Sword of Light represent the elite of the Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery's BattleMech arm. In order to join, one must have five years of flawless service in another regiment and pass a series of mental, physical, spiritual, and political tests. Noncombat staff are tested in the same manner. Sword of Light regiments receive top priority for supplies, and even have their own dedicated JumpShips and DropShips. The Sword of Light regiments are not tied to a specific area of deployment, but travel the realm to assist where needed. Their 'Mech paint scheme is usually flat red, with the Kurita crest on the left shoulder.
Numbering twelve regiments until 2740 when the number of regiments in the Sword of Light was reduced to five, with each regiment representing one of the five Pillars of Combine society, to compensate for the smaller brigade the regiments themselves reorganized to consist of four battalions instead of three.[2]

The Sun Zhang Academy Cadres consist of graduates from the first phase of training from the Sun Zhang MechWarrior Academy. Their training continues as active duty in the Cadres. The students are evaluated after tours of duty that last nine months, after which those that pass graduate.[5][6]
History
The Academy is named after an ancient Japanese military strategist and general, Sun Zhang and it is located on New Samarkand. It teaches only BattleMech and aerospace fighter studies. Graduating soldiers immediately enter military service in the Sun Zhang Academy Cadre, commanded by General Isoroku Kurita himself, in 3025 and a graduate of the Academy.
Completing an education at Sun Zhang guarantees a student a 'Mech or an aerospace fighter. Most senior officers attend this school, which is noted for its harsh discipline and rigorous training in bushido.
Sun Zhang is one of the few schools in the Draconis Combine that honors its graduates with a daishō – a katana paired with a wakizashi. These may be worn with the soldier's dress uniform. If for any reason the soldier dishonors himself in any way, however, he must commit seppuku or face the loss of his 'Mech or fighter, landholdings, titles, rank, and both his own and his family's honor.[3]
Located on the Draconis Combine's original capital world of New Samarkand, the Sun Zhang MechWarrior Academy is particularly notable in that it graduates the most MechWarriors per year of any training facility in the Inner Sphere at over four hundred. The abandoned cities on New Samarkand provide an excellent training ground for MechWarrior and aerospace fighter pilots to practice the intricacies of city fighting.[7]
The Sun Zhang MechWarrior Academy boasts Coordinator Theodore and his son Hohiro Kurita among its alumni. Jinjiro Kurita was also a graduate of the Academy.[8]
Though traditionally the academy trained only MechWarriors and aerospace fighter pilots, the arrival of the Clans prompted the DCMS to add a course of study for battle armor infantry, as well.[4]
After the Jihad, the ISF and O5P added severe psychological and loyalty testing to their evaluations to prevent another Black Dragon Society coup.[9] During the Jihad the Thirteenth and Sixteenth Cadres were used along the Combine's border with Clan Ghost Bear. The Fifth was stationed on Kessel, and suffered heavy losses against the Word of Blake. The Fourteenth Cadre was effectively destroyed on Luthien, with the few survivors being drafted into the 1st Genyosha.[10]
As of 3145 the rigors of recent years has strained the Academy, the best cadets being whisked away to line units before they can serve in one of the Cadres. Though this meets the demands for units bulking out their forces, it starves these cadets of finishing their training. With the same orders to expand their rosters, the Academy has increased its enrollment tenfold. This has led to the creation of the 17th, 18th and 19th Cadres.

Ghost Regiments
The brainchild of Theodore Kurita (from an idea given to him by Michi Noketsuna) in the days following the Fourth Succession War, Theodore turned to the undesirables of the Draconis Combine – women, lower classes and the Yakuza – to quickly form new units in the mold of the Federated Commonwealth Corps. While instrumental in the Combine's defense during the War of 3039, the Ghost Regiments ties to the Yakuza oyabun who funded and outfitted them led to questions as to their loyalty among the more traditional members of the DCMS. The Ghost Regiments were disbanded after the Jihad, partly to meet the Combine's disarmament requirements, partly to appease those opposed to Theodore's reforms.
Legion of Vega
While still tainted by the stigma of being a collection of misfits and malcontents unsuitable to serve in other DCMS units, the Legion of Vega regiments were among the first to follow the modern military doctrine of Theodore Kurita.

Ryuken
Ryuken | |
Formed | 3026 |
Nickname | "The Dragon Sword" |
Affiliation | Draconis Combine |
Parent Command | DCMS |
Trained by and created in the mold of the legendary Wolf's Dragoons mercenary unit, the Ryuken represent some of the most devoted adherents to methods of warfare practiced in the modern Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery, stained by their failure to defeat their former friends.
In 3023 Takashi Kurita hired Wolf's Dragoons to train a regiment in their tactics and tactical doctrines. The Ryuken regiment trained with and fought alongside Wolf's Dragoons, learning how to fight like the Dragoons. The Ryuken succeeded beyond expectations, causing Takashi Kurita to order the regiment broken into companies and to train and expand into their own regiments.
In 3028 the Dragoons' contract with the DCMS expired and Jaime Wolf decided to leave Combine space. Warlord Grieg Samsonov did not want to allow the elite mercenary unit to leave his service and ordered several Ryuken regiments to stop them. The newly formed Ryuken regiments met the Dragoons but proved not to be their match. Though almost crippled in the conflict, the Dragoons decimated four of the Ryuken regiments before leaving Combine space. </onlyinclude>
History
In 3023 Coordinator Takashi Kurita hired the famed Wolf's Dragoons, quickly becoming a vital part of the Draconis Combine's efforts against the Federated Suns. Unfortunately the poor treatment and machinations of Galedon Military District Warlord Grieg Samsonov's attempts to bring the Dragoons under his personal control led the mercenaries to resolve to leave Combine space when their contract expired. Unwilling to lose the Dragoons increasingly important expertise, on 16 December 3025 Takashi decreed that the Dragoons would assist in the creation of a regiment trained and organized in the Dragoon style rather than the traditional DCMS doctrine[1].
The Dragoons willingly offered their experience and tactical doctrine to the newly formed Ryuken (in japanese "Sword of the Dragon"), due to the close relationship between Jaime Wolf and the Dragoons' former DCMS liaison officer and current Ryuken commanding officer Minobu Tetsuhara. Training alongside each other, the Ryuken learned to think like the Dragoons both on and off the battlefield, with the experiment proved an unqualified success Ryuken regiment divided into nine companies which were ordered to expand into regiments and pass on their new training. Unfortunately, the Dragoons' relationship with the DCMS as a whole deteriorated further as Tetsuhara's replacement as liaison, Jerry Akuma, and Warlord Samsomov stepped up their efforts to force the mercenaries into permanent service of the Combine. This was made even worse as Akuma and Samsonov's blatant hatred for the Dragoons (and Akuma's hatred for Tetsuhara) drove them towards interpreting those directives as license to destroy the Dragoons outright.
After being accused of breach of contract, the Dragoons ordered their scattered forces to regroup on the ice planet of Misery and issued a direct challenge to the Combine. Warlord Samsonov responded to the insult by sending Minobu Tetsuhara and the Ryuken to block the Dragoons' departure. While inflicting heavy losses, the Ryuken proved no match for the mercenaries during the Battle of Misery, which saw four of the Ryuken regiments decimated as the Dragoons escaped Combine space.
The knowledge of Samsonov's manipulations and hatred of both the Dragoons and Tetsuhara is all but unknown among the greater DCMS and the Ryuken's honor suffers for their failure to stop the mercenaries. While quickly gaining an important place in the Theodore Kurita led Combine military, the Ryuken relationship with DCMS is always somewhat strained due to bitterness on both sides.[2]
The Ryuken suffered heavy casualties during the Jihad, with the brigade reduced to three commands from five, and as late as 3081 the three surviving commands couldn't muster a single regiment of forces between them.[3] The Ryuken-go were destroyed on Matsuida in 3068 by Federated Suns forces after an extended campaign against greater than two-to-one odds with little or no support. Ryuken-yon was subject to a more ignoble fate; as they prepared to leave their garrison on Ko to join a relief force attempting to liberate Imbros III from Word of Blake forces, Ryuken-yon were ambushed by a Blakist fleet. Many of the Ruken-yon transports were destroyed, others were captured, and the few survivors of the regiment were found in Blakist prison camps. Despite petitioning for Ryuken-yon to be reconstituted, these few were instead distributed to other regiments.[4]
However, the Ryuken may finally have helped to bring about a lasting change within the doctrine of the DCMS; despite the heavy losses taken by the brigade during the Jihad, more of the logistical and command staff of the Ryuken survived as a percentage than any other formation within the DCMS. This, combined with the honor the Ryuken earned for themselves in the eyes of the DCMS with their actions in the Jihad led to the Combine attempting to duplicate some of the doctrine and tactics of the Ryuken on a wider scale; the most obvious result of this was the development of the Teppō support vehicle, a combination artillery and command vehicle intended to allow commanders to influence and direct battles without actually being in the direct line of fire.[5]
The Ryuken as of 3145 have been reconstituted to six regiments. These regiments have had the opportunity to prove their worth next to those troops they were first commissioned to emulate Wolf's Dragoons during the invasion of the Federated Suns[6]

Tactics
- Due to their unique nature, each regiment has special permission to reject any new members whom they judge as unable or unwilling to embrace the Ryuken doctrine.
- Recognizing the Dragoons' high level of respect for their supporting elements, the Ryuken generally boast the best support units among whole DCMS. The Ryuken regiments have always maintained permanently attached supporting forces and is frequently requested assignment for best technicians in the Combine military.

In 2497, the Combine moved to take control of the planets held by the Azami. However, a virus to which the Azami themselves were immune killed the Kurita forces, leaving the determined natives victorious. After this, the Combine decided to grant the Azami limited autonomy in return for their loyalty and service. To make use of their spirit, they were trained as MechWarriors and granted three regiments worth of light and medium 'Mechs. These forces, known as the Arkab Legions, specialize in lightning-quick reconnaissance and raiding.[3]

Affiliation | Draconis Combine |
Parent Command | DCMS |
The core of the forces of the politically-sensitive Rasalhague Military District, the Rasalhague Regulars were noted for their actions against the Lyran Commonwealth as much the constant ISF scrutiny intended to ensure their loyalty to the Combine. The Regulars were disbanded in 3034 upon the formation of the Free Rasalhague Republic.
History
The Rasalhague Regulars began with the formation of the First Rasalhague Regulars in 2730. The founding of the brigade with the formation of the First was something of a public relations coup for both the Draconis Combine and the DCMS; formed on Rasalhague, the First was modeled on the Striker-pattern regiments used by the SLDF and was based around light and medium 'Mechs, with organic aerospace fighter support. The First contained a large proportion of 'Mechs designed by the Star League and produced either in the Combine or purchased as SLDF surplus, including a complete company of Land-Air 'Mechs produced by LexaTech Industries on Irece. The high technological standard of the First made it stand out among the ranks of DCMS units, particularly given the Combine's tendency to lag behind the neighboring Lyran Commonwealth in terms of military technological advancement.[4]
The loyalty of the Rasalhague Regulars was of vital concern to the Kurita family, and subject to constant scrutiny. Even if a Coordinator would like to man these units with dependably loyal, handpicked troops (namely, those who trace their lineages back to ancient Japan on Terra) that would have been dangerous, if not disastrous as nothing would galvanize the anti-Kurita sentiment of the Rasalhague public more quickly than to make every MechWarrior in the Rasalhague Regulars a warrior of Japanese descent. If this kind of action was taken, it would not have taken long for the Rasalhagians to believe that the units were there to watch them instead of to protect them from Lyran aggression. Because of this, most MechWarriors of the Rasalhague Regulars were of European descent, with those of Japanese origin forming a small minority. To be eligible, these warriors had to pass an examination of their political leanings as tough as that given to men entering the Sword of Light regiments. To control this, the ISF was always checking the Rasalhague Regulars, though it had some side effects. One was that the units are almost uniformly paranoid and that almost all their actions off the battlefield were planned to keep agents of the ISF from criticizing their propriety.[6] On top of that, the Procurement department created delays in the flow of supplies so ISF agents could carefully scan every request the units made for parts and equipment to prevent the unit from attempting to stockpile equipment. As a side effect of this, the techs of the Rasalhague Regulars became magnificent scroungers, capable of amazing feats of rigged repairs.[7]
The Rasalhague units have the highest MechWarrior turnover rate among the five districts, mostly because of the strain caused by the constant surveillance. This attrition impairs the Rasalhague Regulars ability to act as true units and not just a collection of MechWarriors. Though their unit skills tend to be poor, they are acceptable to Lord Kurita, who apparently fears rebellion more than he does the Lyran Commonwealth.[7]
Despite the distrust shown the Regulars, they served the Dragon well and honorably for many years. In the Third Succession War it wasn't uncommon for companies or battalions from the Rasalhague Regulars to disappear for weeks or months before appearing on a Lyran factory world and fighting like berserkers. They were instrumental in taking multiple worlds from the Lyrans, often without the direction of Duke Hassad Ricol.[5]
Upon the formation of the Free Rasalhague Republic the Regulars faced the choice of moving further into the Draconis Combine to guard worlds not their own or disobeying the Gunji-no-Kanrei and Coordinator's orders and remain on the worlds. Some Regulars simply retired from the DCMS and joined the new FRR's military, but those that remained chose to ignore the Coordinator's orders. They were declared ronin and those that didn't commit seppuku were destroyed by loyal DCMS troops. None survived the Ronin War of 3034.[5]

Alshain Regulars
Alshain Regulars | |
Formed | 3035 |
Affiliation | Draconis Combine |
Parent Command | DCMS |
Just as the Alshain Military District was formed from the remaining worlds of the Rasalhague Military District not ceded to the Free Rasalhague Republic, the Alshain Regulars consisted of former Rasalhague Regular troops. The Alshain Regulars suffered heavy losses in the Clan Invasion during their failed defense of their district, with the survivors renamed under the banner of the free floating Alshain Avengers.
History
The Alshain Regulars first saw action during the War of 3039, but their inexperience showed and Tai-shu Hassid Ricol was chastised for their lackluster performance. Ricol subsequently instituted an intense training regimen to whip the Regulars into shape, the program including frequent practice raids against one another and into both the Free Rasalhague Republic and Lyran Commonwealth. Their persistence in raiding bore fruit, by 3049 the overall skill of the Alshain Regulars was far beyond the Pesht Regulars despite the young age of the brigade. Additionally, Ricol assigned some of the brigade's better MechWarriors into a special training battalion to hone their skills, these officers intended to replace battalion and regimental commanders when those positions open up either due to death, retirement or dismissal for incompetence. A highly unusual arrangement, the Internal Security Force monitored the battalion for any sign Ricol was attempting to plant officers personally loyal to him across the brigade's regiments.[1]
Caught between Clan Smoke Jaguar and Clan Ghost Bear, the Alshain Regulars suffered heavy losses during their failed defense of their district during the invasion, selling themselves dearly and buying time for the rest of the DCMS to prepare. By the Truce of Tukayyid, the fourteen regiment's worth of troops within the Alshain Regulars had been reduced to five, with three regiments so shattered that the Bureau of Substitution combined them single regiment. Hoping to capitalize on their anger at the loss of their district, the surviving remnants of the Regulars were re-formed as the Alshain Avengers.[2] Their sole objective to retake their homeworld and drive the invaders from Combine space, the Avengers eventually staged an unauthorized invasion of Alshain which triggered the Combine-Ghost Bear War and their destruction.

Early History
The Night Stalkers were formed in 3020 by Tai-sa Lloyd McGavin after he was forced to retire from the Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery due to age and injuries sustained in service to the Dragon. Despite that, and assuming he'd fail, the High Command still honored him with permission to raise a new regiment. He went to private commercial entities throughout the Combine and raised money to form two regiments, McGavin's Regiment and Johiro's Regiment. He filled the officer corps with only retired MechWarriors like himself[3] and the lower billets with failed MechWarrior school dropouts, proving ground graduates, or those destined for less-than-prestigious units. They were considered Free-Floating Regiments, which added to their "dishonor" among the elite of the DCMS.[4]
The unit became known for its raiding tactics, utilizing light BattleMechs and specialized in raids against enemy-held worlds, with most of their success at the expense of the Lyran Commonwealth Armed Forces. Their defensive capabilities had also been praised, especially after the regiments played a vital part defending Yori 'Mech Works at Al Na'ir.[5] Their experienced leadership allowed them to capture objectives that other, younger regiments could not.
However, due to the colonel's affection for his men, he would not use risky tactics which he believed couldn't work. At least twice he refused to sacrifice his "used-up" warriors for marginal gain.[6] This upset a number of officers and the Coordinator, who split the brigade's two regiments into two separate districts. Also, the Coordinator made sure only limited supplies would be sent to the two units as part of their punishment for disobeying orders.[7]
Interregnum
The First Regiment was disbanded sometime prior to 3050. They had survived the Fourth Succession War on Basiliano[8], the Ronin War on Heiligendreuz and Halesowen[9], and the War of 3039 on Matamoras[10], but did not see the return of the Clans.[11]
Clan Invasion, Jihad, and Annihilation
Unlike his father, Theodore Kurita respected the Night Stalkers' philosophy of refusing to sacrifice itself blindly or stupidly and when confronted by the desperate need to rebuild the DCMS from the losses suffered during the initial Clan Invasion, the Coordinator authorized the creation of the new Third Night Stalkers.[12]
The Word of Blake Jihad would prove to be the final death knell of the Night Stalkers, with the Second and Third both shattered after taking heavy losses against the Blakists. The Second Night Stalkers did not take a side when the Black Dragon Society coup erupted, preferring to guard Cebalrai against "outside aggression." In 3069, the Word of Blake did so, leaving only a quarter of the regiment to escape to Ningxia. The remains chose to join the Kokuryu-kai and were subsequently destroyed by the Ryuken-roku.[13]
The Third Night Stalkers garrisoned Lyons and Yorii at the outbreak of the Jihad. The survivors of the reeducation camps would receive the honor of postings to the Otomo.

Younger warriors who deserve promotion are transferred to other DCMS units but are welcomed back once they reach mandatory retirement age. Hopeful retirees number more than open officer positions, and more than 40 percent of the Night Stalkers are voluntarily demoted to chu-i to continue their service. Their higher "honorary" titles continue to be used in informal situations, with a pin recognizing their past service.[14]

Dover Institute of Higher Learning
Located on Benjamin, the Dover Institute grew out of the destroyed People's Reconstruction Effort (PRE). The Institute trains MechWarriors to think before they act, and can spend days dissecting a single simulator battle. Since the military academy is part of a larger, civilian institute; MechWarriors often have a more liberal background in literature and the sciences than graduates of other military training centers.
Dieron District Gymnasium
One of the least prestigious academies in the Draconis Combine, DDG is essentially what its name implies. Cadets have the freedom to take what what courses they desire, which are often hastily assembled and meet in a corner of the massive gym. Once a cadet has accumulated enough class time, he or she can earn a sort of "pass" for simulator time. Once enough sim hours have been logged, they qualify for a live-fire session. Some cadets take their time graduating, while others hurry out as quickly as possible; but all are battle-ready. DDG, which is located on Shionoha, only graduates around fifteen MechWarriors a year, but they are generally the most well-prepared graduates.
Internal Security College
Located on New Samarkand, the ISC is the required academy for the Combine's feared Internal Security Force. The enrollment lists are classified, and classes include espionage, interrogation and terrorism. Nevertheless, a significant number of graduates end up serving the ISF from within the DCMS, often keeping tabs on their fellows.
Minoru Kurita University
Coordinator Minoru Kurita established this "university" around the fall of the Star League in preparation for the fighting that he believed was to come (and did, in the form of the Succession Wars). MKU is known for churning out infantrymen as fast as possible, with their first battle often serving as their final exam. Due to the exceptionally high rate of failure of this final, MKU boasts few alumni.
Pagoda for Luthien Officers
Located on the capital of Luthien, PLO trains MechWarriors and aerospace fighter pilots. The pagoda mostly caters to nobles who will not see actual combat. It focuses on social niceties rather than military training, though such classes are available for students who wish to pursue them. It is the rare student who avails him- or herself of all of the resources at the academy to earn a real education. The highest ranking of the pagoda's alumni is Isoroku Kurita, who was one such cadet.
Sun Zhang MechWarrior Academy
Located on the original capital of New Samarkand, SZMA is especially notable in that it graduates the most MechWarriors per year of any training facility in the Inner Sphere, over 400. SZMA also has an aerospace fighter pilot program. It is often considered the most prestigious military academy in the Draconis Combine and all of its graduates receive a daisho. SZMA boasts Theodore and Hohiro Kurita among its alumni.
Sun-Tzu School of Combat
The school of combat instructs all of its cadets in combined-arms warfare, no matter their specialty. STSC is notable in that it is the only school to award a daisho to graduates in all modes of study. Hohiro Kurita attended STSC before completing his training at SZMA, as his father Theodore believes in STSC's approach to warfare.
University of Proserpina
Located on the border world of Proserpina, UP is one of the centers of advanced technology in the Draconis Combine. Infantry crews, MechWarriors, and pilots are all trained at UP, which was one of the first military training facilities to offer a battle armor program.
Wisdom of the Dragon
Wisdom is more akin to a finishing school or an officer school than a traditional military academy. In fact, only officers and officer candidates may take part in the program. It is not uncommon for seasoned officers to attend the school for refreshers. Regardless of whether an individual received one elsewhere or not, all graduates are given a daisho.
Military Ranks
The DCMS has used the same basic rank system for nearly four hundred years, with Theodore Kurita making two minor modifications, assigning the rank of Tai-shu to all Warlords and adjusting the other high-level ranks in response as well as assigning Japanese names to all enlisted ranks as a gesture of respect for their increasing worth to the Combine military.
All DCMS ranks use stylized katakana numerals as insignia, worn on the left collar of their uniform on small colored rectangle designating their service branch. For samples of the DCMS rank images, please see the Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery Rank Insignia page.
Those colors are:
